.The second glass of wine was welcome, as was Adam, who’d decided to sit next to him now, turned sideways with an arm along the back of the couch.“I liked that kiss,” he said, “up until your phone going off.It feels wicked, kissing a rozzer.”“Not as naughty as kissing the teacher.” Robin leaned over the arm of the sofa, put his wineglass on the side table, turned back, smiling.“Only this is sinful.Or at least unethical.I’m right at the boundary of what’s acceptable by just being here, anyway.”Adam inched away.“Sorry.I didn’t mean to get you into trouble. It’s just.” He shrugged.“It can’t be easy for you, having to run a killer to ground, but it isn’t easy for those of us who found him, either.I keep remembering those eyes.Horrible.” Adam’s hands trembled around the stem of his wineglass.“I feel safe when you’re here, you know.I guess that’s why I asked you to come back tonight, so I wouldn’t have to be alone with my thoughts.I should have realised it wouldn’t be the done thing.”“I get that.Things seem less intolerable when I’m with you too.” Why the hell did fate have to be so cruel, putting them in a room together when the sparks of attraction couldn’t help but fly? “It’s been too long since I met a decent bloke.”Adam smiled.“You too? I thought I was the only person in the county not getting any.”There was an easy way to rectify that, for both of them.Too easy, though.“I’ve not wanted to kiss anyone as much as I want to kiss you.Not in a long time.” Robin picked up his glass again, to give his hands something safe to do.“But I might as well want the moon.Ain’t going to happen.”“Why not?” Adam leaned across and made it happen.A prolonged, almost-desperate kiss, mellowing into affection.“See? You got the moon.”“Aren’t you listening to me?” Robin wasn’t sure his own conscience was listening to him anymore.“We can’t get involved. Not till this case is done and dusted, and maybe not then.”Adam pulled back again.“Because you think I did it?”“Don’t be an idiot.” Robin didn’t mention the one percent of doubt that remained in his mind; that would stay there until the real killer was identified.“I meant that, if and when it gets to court, I don’t want your evidence tainted by association with me.Or else some clever defence lawyer will discredit our case.” That sounded better than I don’t want to jeopardise my career.Adam thought for a moment, then nodded.“I can’t see how I could possibly be a key witness to anything, but I’ll try not to lead you astray.”“Thanks.” The way Robin felt, he’d be easily led.Not just because of how much he fancied Adam.Being in his bed would take Robin’s mind off a murder he had no bloody idea how to solve. Not fair to either of them.“Want to call it a night? Not that I want you to go just yet.”“I don’t particularly want to go.” Robin took a deep breath.“I just don’t want us to have any regrets tomorrow.Professional or personal.”“Tell me about it.” Adam took Robin’s hand.“Look, I’m tired and I’m upset and I’m fed up with sleeping alone.I can’t see beyond my own needs.Just like one of my pupils,” he added, with a weary smile.“I don’t fancy waking to an empty house.”It would be so easy for Robin simply to give in to servicing Adam’s desires, to relax and let himself be led rather than always chasing and searching. From the settee to the door, into the hall, up the stairs, into the bedroom. How simple it would be.How simple and how devastating.“My car’s outside.People notice these things.” Robin felt the fight ebbing from him.How long had it been since he’d woken to somebody else being in the house?“You hardly get anyone down this road, not outside of the rush hour. But if you’re worried, you could put it in my garage.”“You’re not making it easy for me to leave, are you?”“I’d like to make it impossible,” Adam said, but he let Robin’s hand go.“If you want to sleep over in the spare bed, do it.No catches. If not, I won’t mention it again.”Robin’s legs felt like lead.It would be so much easier just to put his head down here, but the easiest option wasn’t always the right one.He fished out his car keys.“I should go.”Robin took Adam’s arm as they got to the front door
